Estheticians is one of today’s fastest-growing segments of the salon and spa industry. They perform facials, hair removal, and other body treatments such as massage. Estheticians must be able to recognize abnormalities in the skin and recommend effective treatments to correct those abnormalities.  Estheticians are just as important as makeup artist themselves because without the proper skin care makeup can do no justice.

Estheticians not only concentrate on the face but they also specialize in full body care such as massages, body wraps, body peels, and body scrubs.  These processes keep your total body looking just as good as your face.  Hair removal is another one of their specialties using waxing techniques, tweezing, and some even are certified in laser hair removal.  The demand for licensed Estheticians is rapidly growing with many salons now offering full body care services to their customers.

To become an Esthetician you must attend an accredited beauty school for training.  Most accredited beauty schools offer programs specifically for estheticians. In this program the student learns to prescribe kin care regimens, apply makeup, waxing, massages, and total body care.  The course is typically 9 to 18 months depending on if you go fulltime or part-time.  Once you have finished the training curricula you will be required to pass a state administered licensing test in order to your actual license as an esthetician.

The salary for an esthetician will vary depending on

1) the type of salon he/she works for, is it upscale or just starting out.

2) Are you salaried or commissioned?  If you are salaried the salon pays you a set salary per month for your services therefore you will get the same amount whether you have 20 clients or 10.  If you are commissioned then you will get a percentage of every customer you service, there for lots of customers equal lots of money…or few customers mean less money.  The national average salary for an Esthetician is $41,000.00 and varies with the area.

You also have the option of working for yourself and providing your services to customers in their homes.  If you go this route you will considered self employed and must register your business with your state, and you will be responsible for paying your own taxes on the money you make from your services.  Prices for services typically start at $45 for facials but can increase depending on the type of facial and the length of the facial.  Massages can start at $50 and go as high as $250 for the hour depending on the technique and tools used for the massage not to mention the time.  Prescribing skin care regimens can run anywhere from $200 to $500 depending on the severity of the problem, and products used.

The cost for an accredited Esthetician programs is generally between $3500 to $5000 depending on the school and area.  There are various types of grants and loans available to help with the costs associated with the program.  These loans are often government based but private loans are also available.
