Barbering is the art of performing cosmetic and hair services on men. While some states allow those with barbering licenses to work on both women and men traditionally barbers perform services on almost exclusively men.
Barbers as members of the beauty industry have always been in high demand. A good barber can expect a very loyal clientele and a very nice income as a result, since men traditionally will need to have services performed more often than women. Many prefer to work as barbers in the beauty industry because statistics show that men are better tippers.
Traditionally barbers are independent business owners and may not always work for someone else’s salon establishment. Because of this a barbering program will often include a market and business management, component as part of the overall course work. If it isn’t, barbering students would benefit themselves by learning about these topics elsewhere.
Barbering is often taught as a larger cosmetology program. In barbering school, students will learn to color, cut, trim and style men’s hair as well as facial hair services and the art of the shave. You will also learn safety and sanitation procedures. As with all students in the beauty industry, safety and sanitation is a large part of the training you will receive. The number of hours required to be completed to be eligible for licensure will vary by state, usually anywhere between 800 and 1600 hours, and of the course hours about half of them will revolve around safety and sanitation procedures.
Most barbering programs will teach scalp treatments, shaving, and hairstyling services for men. You may, depending on the program that you choose, learn to fit artificial hair and toupees as well.
Barbering students should make sure to choose an accredited school that offers hands on train as well as a good solid theoretical study program as well. After the completion of the program and after acquiring a license from the state board of cosmetology in whatever state you will practice, you will be qualified to work in a variety of settings including department stores, hotels or resorts, salons, cruise ships, as well as be an independent business owner and work for yourself. While it is a lot of work to own your own business, this option does also allow you the ability to set you own schedule and set your own prices for your services.
So if you think that you might be interested in a job in the beauty industry consider taking a program in barbering. It may just be the career path that you have been looking for.
